Pardon my French, but every now and then I know I need to “eat a shit sandwich.” This translates to “I need to give up being right.”

I’m a big fan of Stephen Covey’s assertion that building trust is essential to leadership. I bring this concept into executive team offsites as well as one-on-one coaching as a vital goal for leaders. Bottom line: if your team doesn’t trust you, they won’t follow you.

It's not just about what you say, but how it's received and understood. The weight of comprehension lies heavily on the shoulders of the communicator. This places us in a position of responsibility.

I have so much admiration for people who can keep it all in their heads and accomplish the tasks, calls, and appointments. I’m starting to wonder if they are just smarter by committing to fewer tasks at a time?

This week, I found myself reevaluating my trust in someone due to an unfulfilled promise. In the ensuing contemplation (which persists even now), I couldn't help but notice my laser focus on justifying my lack of trust, casting it as the sole reality.

How often do you make mistakes at work? They can range from small ones with little consequence, such as wearing socks that do not match or forgetting a colleague’s name, to major blunders that can result in the loss of business, time, reputation, or even employment.

We just wrapped up an incredible week with Ideon Technologies at The Brew Creek Centre outside of Whistler, BC. We learned so much from this dynamic and innovative leadership team that I felt compelled to share about the breakthrough work they are up to.

My vulnerability didn't weaken me; it empowered me. And more importantly, it inspired others to embrace their own vulnerabilities and authenticity.

During the last administration, in a particular period of rather nasty and heated political back and forth, I found myself thinking, “Whatever happened to decency?” The politics of nasty now has a solid footing.

I've witnessed firsthand the detrimental impact of unchecked expectations. I notice that we are so surprised by the unexpected even when we know that it is part of life.
