What Would Yvette Do?

I have a business coaching client who runs a very successful mortgage office.  And by “very” successful, I mean she was the #1 producer last year, and in the top 1% in her industry. 

In an industry heavy with regulations and rules of what you can and can’t do, she tenaciously brings the attitude of "FIND A WAY" for her customers’ benefit. 

Before working with her, I never realized how much “out-of-the-box” thinking it takes to navigate the process of getting someone a home loan.  If the average person were in her shoes they might easily come to the first road block and tell the customer, “Sorry … the numbers come back too low.  We can’t get you a loan.”

Not Yvette.

I’ve actually heard her in action (through the door of her office) step right over road blocks like they were the red carpet to the front door of the bank itself.  She asks questions, listens for details, gets realtors aligned, talks to accountants, massages egos, counsels married couples, moves meetings around … anything that gets the deal closed.  The whole time she’s on this adventure, she keeps a smile on her face and maintains a positive attitude.

Finding a way is the most natural expression of who she is.  At times when I’m confronted with an issue I can’t seem to figure out, I will ask myself,

What would Yvette do in this situation?”  

That little trick helps tremendously.  Solutions don’t magically appear out of nowhere, but they don’t get found if I stop looking for them either.  WWYD is a great resource in itself.

Doing this on an individual level has value, but how this fundamental can really go to work for your business is to institutionalize it.  Get your whole organization on board with this attitude, and start with who you hire.  My colleague Marlene writes about how to avoid what I call a “culture of defeat.”

In this day and age there are many distractions at our fingertips.  However, there have never been more resources, either.  If you don’t have an "Yvette" as your motivational North Star, you might want to FIND A WAY to get one.
