Service is 360 | FOW #8

We serve each other, our customers, and ourselves when we serve the community. Demonstrate making a difference.

When we say service is 360 we typically think about serving our customers or clients. We have a Fundamental that is just about serving the client that we highlighted last week.  However, today's Fundamental represents our commitment to service beyond our working world. With all the responsibilities and promises we make in this fast-moving culture, serving others could occur like another thing on the to-do list.  And, if it is a “to-do” item, it certainly will feel heavy, unrewarding, and inauthentic for everyone.

Why do we need to make time to serve?

As an executive coach, I have the privilege of working with highly successful professionals.I often have clients feel dissatisfied at some point in their career when they’ve accomplished their goals. They tend to struggle with “what do I do now?” or they say “I’m bored”.That’s when I know, it’s time for them to serve. I challenge my clients to find a service project and get to work.“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” Mahatma GandhiAs Gandhi says, when we take the focus off of ourselves, we get in touch with something more extraordinary. The gift of your time, your presence, your generosity has an impact beyond the act of kindness. According to the Huffington Post, here are 7 reasons why serving others is important:

  1. More Happiness
  2. Reduce Stress
  3. Relief from Pain
  4. Longer lifespan
  5. Lower blood pressure
  6. Reduce mild depression
  7. Benefit your career

With all of these benefits, it proves that serving others actually has a boomerang effect and serves us right back!Find something that feels good to you. Start small and build in more time as you go.Remember, helping others only has the benefits if you truly care about what you’re doing and who you’re helping. What goes around, comes around!!In service,Martha Lynn
