How A Budget Haircut Put Everything in Perspective
In addition to being a coach, I am also a sexual assault awareness speaker.
Last week, I visited the University of Wyoming to give a talk. Laramie is a very small town and when looking for a place to get my hair done I was left with one option: Walmart. No, I didn’t know Walmart had a hair salon, either. You learn something new every day!
To be honest, my first reaction to the idea of Walmart glam was unfavorable. However, after checking my ego and realizing I REALLY didn’t want to do it myself, I decided to give that Walmart salon a try. It ended up being one of the best haircuts and blowouts I’ve ever received. All for the price of $37! When reflecting on what made it such a positive experience, I was reminded of a powerful life lesson:
Letting go of expectations often leads to a much happier existence.
Almost every other time I’ve gotten my hair done, it has been much more expensive, and I’ve left less satisfied. It’s not that the high-end salons in Austin are doing a worse job than Walmart, but instead that I let go of any expectations or judgments once I decided to go there.
It’s important to honor our standards and values. However, once we make the decision to go through with something, attaching ourselves to expectations is often unproductive.
Fundamental of the Week #23: PRACTICE RECOVERY
When mistakes or errors in judgment happen, own it. Take the necessary steps to communicate to the appropriate parties, acknowledge your accountability, and set corrective steps in motion. Get back in the game quickly.
