The Economics of Decency on Display

Returning from a three-day workshop at Wizard Academy, I had the economics of decency on my mind. The Wizard Academy is a living demonstration of the profitability of decency. My first taste was close to twenty years ago, and they have never ceased to be illuminating. Wizard is an untraditional business school, with a focus on small businesses, that always delivers groundbreaking work. Structured as a non-profit, Wizard Academy...

  • Built a magical, debt-free campus

  • Offers a curriculum of unique and transformative programs

  • Has grown on the gifts and generosity of their graduates

As a participant, you are fed, housed and engaged just as you would like your people to be engaged. Built on scientific research, the programs guide you through the labyrinths of brain functioning, threading its shadows into the light of clarity.

What are the economics of decency demonstrated here?

  • The product is high quality.

  • The focus always is on people.

  • They grow because people come back and bring others.

Those represent fundamental pillars of decency on which organizations grow, prosper and attract people. The contrast to “business as usual” is remarkable.

We have spent years endeavoring to bring the principle, “decency pays,” to the people we work with, and Wizard has been a great model for us. The struggle is how far we have to go. The encouraging part? Many organizations are starting to realize that culture is NOT the “soft stuff.”  It is the ONLY stuff! The economics of decency is a platform to build cultures of engagement, growth and prosperity.

May the spirit of Thanksgiving stay with you this week.

Regards,

Craig

Fundamental # 3: SPEAK STRAIGHT, RESPECTFULLY

Speak honestly and clearly in a way that moves the action forward. Say what you mean. Ask questions for clarity, share ideas and be willing to raise issues, even if they may create conflict, when it is needed for success or maintaining collaboration.  Address issues directly with those who are involved or affected. Take responsibility for getting your message across.
