Can Having Fun at Work Make You More Productive?

We have all heard of working smart, but what about working fun?

For the last few years, I’ve had a goal to produce and film more social media content for coaching. Until a few weeks ago, it went something like this:

  1. Post something really great.

  2. Get great feedback.

  3. Go radio silent for three months.

  4. Repeat.

The harder I tried to get myself to make more content, the harder I fought it. And the more pressure I felt to create the content, the worse it was. At times, it felt hopeless.

Then in Fall of 2022, I noticed a trend on Tiktok called “Get ready with me.”

Suddenly, every other video on my feed was a girl doing her hair and makeup while telling stories about their adventures at college. As a girly girl, this definitely appealed to me and got me thinking. What if I did the same thing, but instead of sharing late-night drunk tales, I gave coaching advice and added value to the people we serve? It could be a fun twist to keep people engaged.

It only took me filming one video to realize that this absolutely lit me up.

It reminded me of the good old days when my girlfriends and I would chat over FaceTime while getting ready for a big night out. Something about this format made it feel effortless and easy to speak on topics dear to my heart. Most importantly, instead of dragging myself to film a video every three months, I was excited about a new idea every three hours.

Had I decided this wasn't going to work before trying it, I’d still be banging my head against the wall trying to figure out how to get myself to make more content. So the next time you are struggling to accomplish the task at hand, ask yourself, “Is there a fun way that could make this more effective?” If there is (even if it seems a little juvenile or unconventional), I highly recommend you give it a try. Because you never know; maybe work can be fun after all.
